Hey brothers and sisters in Christ, it’s Jason with Christ Peer-to-Peer. Today, I want to talk about something that’s been transformative for me: confession.
I grew up angry. I had a rough upbringing and carried that anger into my adulthood. For years, I didn’t know how to process my emotions or navigate my life’s challenges. It wasn’t until my late 30s, and now in my mid-40s, that I found some peace. One of the key reasons for this change has been confession.
Growing up Baptist and evangelical, there was no emphasis on confession in my church. It wasn’t something we practiced or even talked about much. However, I discovered the importance of confession when I decided to get clean and sober and truly pursue God. In Scripture, we are clearly instructed to confess our sins to each other (James 5:16). It says that God won’t forgive us if we don’t forgive others, and if we hold grudges, God holds it against us (Matthew 6:14-15).
I realized I had been carrying so much emotional garbage for years. Confession has been like taking out the trash that had been piling up inside me. My soul feels lighter now. I feel better than I ever have in my life. Confession, prayer, and studying Scripture have become more important to me than attending church services. These practices have truly transformed my life.
A new friend recently suggested therapy, but for me, this is my therapy. We live in a world where people are quick to diagnose and medicate, but often what we need is a spiritual remedy. I believe secrets are poison. Keeping secrets weighed me down, but living by the principle of no secrets has made me a better person.
I encourage you, even if your church doesn’t have a mechanism for confession, to find a way to do it. Make videos, write it down, or find someone to talk to. It’s incredibly freeing. As Jesus said in John 8:32, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
So, brothers and sisters, don’t be afraid to confess and let go of your burdens. Let’s strive to live honest and open lives, following the path God has laid out for us.
Love you all. ❤️
