Human Animals: The Right to Exist
Hey everyone, Jason here with Christ Peer to Peer. I wanted to share some heavy thoughts that have been weighing on me today. 🕊️🙏
This morning, I read a heartbreaking headline. The Supreme Court has upheld the right for the police to ticket and fine homeless people for sleeping outside. This decision came after several entities took the issue to court, fighting for the basic right of homeless individuals to sleep without being harassed or fined. Unfortunately, the ruling did not go in favor of those who need it most.
Think about it: Jesus and His disciples were often homeless, moving from place to place. If they were here today, this law would make their way of life illegal. They’ve essentially made Jesus illegal. Why isn’t anyone more upset about this? 😞
The Bible tells us in Matthew 8:20: “Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.'” This verse reminds us that even Jesus experienced homelessness. Our laws should reflect compassion and understanding for those in need, just as Jesus did.
As I’ve been following these court cases, I’ve thought deeply about our rights as human beings. God created us and gave us dominion over the earth and its creatures. We have the right to exist, to seek shelter, to eat, and to rest. No organization or governing body has the right to take away our God-given rights to be human animals.
It’s a God-given right to find a place to sleep, to fish from a stream if you’re hungry, to use the restroom, and to build a shelter if you need one. These are fundamental rights that come from being human.
Brothers and sisters, we must remember what Isaiah 1:17 teaches us: “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” Let’s seek justice for those who are marginalized and oppressed. Let’s be the voice for the voiceless and stand up for their right to simply exist.
